The Furnas Fumaroles are a fascinating geological spectacle where the earth literally breathes hot steam, offering a rare glimpse into the underground volcanic activity of São Miguel. This field of active fumaroles, with temperatures reaching up to 100°C, reveals the living force of Azorean volcanism.
Walk along the wooden walkways and observe the various geothermal phenomena: boiling water springs, bubbling mud pools, and sulfurous steam rising from cracks in the ground. The contrast between the intense thermal activity and the surrounding lush greenery creates an almost otherworldly landscape. This is also where many local restaurants bury their pots to cook the traditional Furnas stew using geothermal heat.
